Sony has today unveiled a new stacked CMOS sensor for mobile devices. The company's imaging tech for smartphones has produced impressive results in the past and the EXMOR RS IMX230 sensor is billed as the next big step in mobile photography. Sporting the same number of pixels as the shooter found on the Xperia X3, this new sensor introduces advanced camera functionality.

Sony boasts that its new sensor is the first stacked CMOS image sensor with an image plane phase detection signal processing function for high-speed AF (autofocus). This feature will enable users to capture quick moving objects and enjoy faster focus on those that are stationary. HDR is also used with both video and still image capture.
The company states that the new EXMOR RS IMX230 sensor will be available from April 2015, possibly hinting at the camera tech being installed on the next Xperia smartphone. Check the Sony announcement for more details and technical data.
