While Philips Hue smart lighting has been around for a while, it has almost always required the use of a Hue Hub. Most of the deals we see are on starter kits that include a bulb or two but also have the hub. This deal is part of a new series released earlier this year that has both Bluetooth and Zigbee built in so you don't need a hub anymore. Of course, if you already have a hub or you want to use one because you plan to create a large Hue ecosystem, that's okay too. The bulb will work with the hub. It just doesn't need to.

You can set the mood with this bulb using up to 16 million colors. Control the light with your mobile device or your smart home's voice assistant. It is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. The Hue Bluetooth app can control up to 10 smart bulbs by itself, and of course you can use devices like the $22 Echo Dot. If you ever plan to add more than that you'll want to get the hub to control up to 50.

Use your app to create timers and routines and automate your new smart bulb. You can add other accessories like motion detectors and smart switches, too, for even more functionality.

The bulb has a lifetime of 22 years or 25,000 hours and is Energy Star certified. The smart bulb has 3.8 stars out of 5 based on 162 reviews.
