MediaTek announces Helio G25 and G35 chipsets for sub-$100 'gaming phones'
What you need to know
- MediaTek has introduced two new chipsets targeted at entry-level 'gaming' phones.
- Both the new Helio G25 and G35 are octa-core processors built on a 12nm process.
- The first phones powered by the Helio G25 and G35 chips are set to go on sale next month.
MediaTek has introduced two new "gaming-focused" chipsets that are aimed at entry-level phones. Similar to the Helio G85 chipset announced last month, both the new Helio G25 and G35 chipsets are built on a 12nm FinFET production process.
The Helio G25 uses eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz, with an IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU running at 650MHz. It supports up to 6GB LPDDR4x memory at 1600MHz, eMMC 5.1 storage, and 1600 x 720 HD+ resolution displays. It also supports up to 13MP + 8MP dual cameras or a single 21MP camera with 1080p @30fps video encoding. On the connectivity front, the Helio G25 offers Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, Dual 4G VoLTE, Multi-GNSS options, and FM radio.
MediaTek's Helio G35 is similar to the Helio G25 in most areas, but comes with a few minor upgrades. Its eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores run at a higher 2.3GHz clock speed, while the IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU is clocked at 680MHz. The chipset supports up to 25MP single cameras and 2400 x 1080 Full HD+ displays with a 20:9 aspect ratio.
To deliver an immersive gaming experience, the chips feature MediaTek's HyperEngine game technology. MediaTek says the technology "ensures intelligent and dynamic management of the CPU, GPU, and memory." It can can also trigger Wi-Fi and LTE concurrency within milliseconds to ensure a lag-free connection during gaming sessions.
The Redmi 9A and 9C, which were announced earlier today, are powered by the latest Helio chips. Realme C11, which also made its debut today, runs on the Helio G35 chipset. More phones powered by the two chips are expected to be launched in the coming weeks.
