Galaxy Z Fold 3 could be Samsung's first phone with an under-display camera
What you need to know
- A new report out of South Korea claims the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will come equipped with an under-display camera.
- ZTE's Axon 20 5G is currently the only smartphone with an under-display selfie camera.
- The Galaxy Z Fold 2 successor is tipped to launch in the third quarter of 2021.
Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 2 is, without a doubt, the most impressive foldable phone released so far. It is a significant upgrade over its predecessor in nearly every area and is one the best Android phones of the year. If a new report out of South Korea is to be believed, its successor will also be an extremely impressive device.
As per ETNews, Samsung has started developing related technologies for the Galaxy Z Fold 3's under-display selfie camera. The display panel for the under-display camera solution is being developed by Samsung Display, while the camera sensor is being developed by Samsung's System LSI division. Along with the specialized hardware, Samsung is apparently also working on a sophisticated image correction algorithm that will improve the quality of photos taken by the camera.
Currently, the only phone with an under-display selfie camera is ZTE's Axon 20 5G, which was announced in China in September. Xiaomi is expected to commercialize its third-gen under-display camera solution next year. Samsung reportedly plans to differentiate its foldable phones with under-display cameras next year. This could mean that we may have to wait until 2022 for the first Galaxy S series flagship with an under-display camera.
Aside from an under-display camera, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is also rumored to feature S Pen support. Like the Galaxy S21 Ultra, however, the foldable is not expected to feature a dedicated slot for an S Pen.
