Round Robin: WMExpert’s Dieter Bohn Video Review of the T-Mobile G1
For Week 4 of the Smartphone Round Robin, the T-Mobile G1 is in the hands of our good friend Dieter Bohn! Dieter just finished up his Video Review and first impressions of the T-Mobile G1 but instead of choosing the normal route of detailing the hardware and software, he elects to do something entirely different–he defends the G1’s hardware.
Let’s face it. The G1 has caught a lot of flack for its supposed “ugly” and “bland” design. Deserved or not, even we at Android Central admit its not the prettiest in the bunch. So for Dieter to go out and defend the hardware? That’s bold.
You should check out his Video Review to see the great points he raises on the design and it just might make you re-evaluate the way you saw the T-Mobile G1. One more thing. He even defends the chin.
Go check out Dieter’s Video Defense of the T-Mobile G1’s hardware!

Round Robin: Blackberry Bold Video
We’re now in Week 3 of the Smartphone Round Robin and we have the Blackberry Bold in the Android Central headquarters! The Blackberry Bold is a much celebrated device and deservedly so, the Bold is a magnificent piece of hardware–everything is simply top notch. From the gorgeous screen to the superb build quality, the folks at RIM definitely put a lot of thought into this puppy–everything is so well executed and in concert.
Like any Blackberry (well almost any Blackberry, looking at you Storm), you can expect a few features to be as good as it gets on the Bold–namely the keyboard and E-mail. Both are definitely effective, though we still personally like our G1’s Gmail App better than anything on Blackberry.
There are a few quirks and kinks in the Blackberry OS that, though upgraded from previous generations, still don’t seem like the ‘modern’ way to go. We’ll get more into that concept as the week goes along, so in the meantime, check out Android Central’s Video Review of the Blackberry Bold!

Round Robin: Crackberry Kevin’s Final Thoughts on the T-Mobile G1
Ending the 2nd Week of the Smartphone Round Robin, Crackberry Kevin delivers his final thoughts on the T-Mobile G1! In his initial Video Review, Crackberry Kevin sounded very excited to be using the G1. And though some of that excitement subsided, he still sees A LOT of potential in Android and is hopeful for a G2, G3, or G4 to be a real game changer.
To give a quick summary: he was initially unsure of Android’s market penetration strategy, not the biggest fan of the hardware but loves the home screen experience and Android Market! I’m surprised he didn’t mention the notifications system on the G1–but we at Android Central know thats the best in all of smartphones already. Go give Crackberry Kevin a piece of your mind!

Round Robin: iPhone 3G Review & Final Thoughts

The first week of the Smartphone Round Robin has ended and I must bid a fond farewell to the iPhone 3G. If you missed my first impressions, be sure to take a look at my Video Review of the iPhone 3G. To be honest, I had a really good time with the iPhone 3G but am definitely looking forward to seeing what else is out there in the smartphone world.
For some reason, the iPhone 3G and the T-Mobile G1 have always been linked to one another. Though that may be the nature of any smartphone being compared to the iPhone, the fact that the T-Mobile G1 is being likened to the success story of the iPhone should be considered a good thing. Certainly, they outpace the other in some aspects but I found alot of where the iPhone 3G was good, the G1 was nearly as good.
So what does this Android User think of the iPhone 3G?

Round Robin: Rene’s Video Review of the T-Mobile G1
So let me fill you in with how the Smartphone Round Robin works: Every editor of the SPE network sites trade in their phones for a spin with another smartphone. So not only will you be able to see my Androidified opinion about the iPhone 3G, AT&T Fuze, Blackberry Bold, and Palm Treo Pro — you’ll be able to see what everyone else thinks about our beloved G1 and the exciting Android OS!
Since Android is the newest kid on the block and essentially non-existent outside the US and UK, you’ll definitely see some mix ups and false starts from the get go. Our good friend Rene takes the first crack at the T-Mobile G1 and comes away…confused. To give you a preview, the plethora of input options is too much for him to handle!
Go on over to The iPhone Blog to check out Rene’s thoughts and see his video on Android and the T-Mobile G1. I agree with a lot of what he’s saying but believe after a few more days he’ll see that though the Android way is different, it is also a great way to go. Head on over to give him a piece of your mind!
Ed. note: Rene’s video is hilarious. Make sure you’re not eating lunch or reading in a meeting because food pieces will fly and hooting & hollering will surely occur. Just warning ya!

Round Robin: iPhone 3G Video
And the 2nd Annual SPE Smartphone Round Robin begins! We at Android Central have given up our beloved G1 in favor of the other smartphones in the SPE Network. Though we’ve only had the T-Mobile G1 for a month, we’re already missing the plethora of input options, Android Market, and that nifty slide mechanism. Hopefully we can survive.
The first device we’re going to be reviewing? The iPhone 3G. The iPhone 3G and the G1 have been linked with one another ever since people began whispering about a Google Phone and rightly so. They are the most exciting smartphone platforms because they offer a fresh start: there’s no deadweight of history or dated processes that hold them back.
But behind the comparisons and their similarities lies completely different philosophies in building a smartphone platform. Aside from the great features that they both have (superb touch screen, great web broswer, an application store, etc.) the two platforms really couldn’t be more different.
So with that brief bit of history between the two devices, we’re jumping into a quick look at the iPhone with a video! To give you a bit of a preview: I absolutely love multi touch. love the form factor. love the ease of use. My gripes? Well, you’ll have to stay tuned the rest of the week to read my full review!

Review: Android on the T-Mobile G1

We’ve given you a full review of the T-Mobile G1 from a hardware perspective and also shown you a video walkthough of the basics how how Android works, now it’s time to give a full review of Android itself. More specifically, however, we should note that this is a review of Android as it currently exists on the T-Mobile G1 platform. One of the important things to note about Android is that we expect it to evolve very rapidly in the coming months and years and that we expect it to be pretty highly customized from device to device. So what we have to say about Android here should be taken with a grain of salt: some of this stuff may change.
That said, Android is a strong entrant into the Smartphone world — it gets a lot of stuff right and a few things wrong. To find out which is which, read on! › Continue reading
Review: T-Mobile G1 Hardware
It has been a long while since speculation first began for a Google Phone. After all, it seemed like a natural order of events for a web-centric, ad based revenue company like Google to move on to the world of smartphones. But Google threw a curveball with Android, it wasn’t going to make a Google phone per se, it was going to make the operating system on which phones are based. Google is after all a software company.
Insert HTC and T-Mobile. HTC has much experience making smartphones and populates much of the smartphone market. Previously, they have been an unknown company that builds the phones while other companies re-brand and market them. This was the case for the T-Mobile G1. Originally determined to be the HTC Dream, T-Mobile decided to make it clear that the G1 was going to be the first Android device. Google One, anyone?
When the anticipation for the G1 and Android began to turn into a frenzy, T-Mobile launched an event that will soon become an important date in Android History. It showed off the first Android phone. What was shocking was that the G1 wasn’t a jaw-dropper; it didn’t blow anyone away. The design was understated, a throwback of sorts, but people still began to question if this was the right device to launch Android with.
Well, after our own initial doubts and the industry’s ribbing, after using the T-Mobile G1 for a week, we can say that the folks at Google, T-Mobile, and HTC got it right. This is a great phone to launch Android with. Is it perfect? Not yet. Is it any good? Definitely. Check out the rest of the review to see where it succeeds and where it can improve!

Review: G1 Screen Protector by SPE
It’s launch day for the G1 today and undoubtedly people are going to be hunting down some accessories. The G1’s screen has a few of problems with it. First: it’s plastic and therefore vulnerable to scratches. Second: it’s pretty reflective and is susceptible to glare. Third: it collects fingerprints with a vengeance.
So naturally the first thing I wanted to do was slap a screen protector on it. Enter the SPE Screen Protector Pack for the T-Mobile G1. It’s a three pack of matted-screen protectors for 14.95. Read on to see if and how they tackle the above issues!
