Get G1 Root Access Back with Leaked RC29 Firmware

A lot of us (me included) mindlessly upgraded to the RC30 firmware on our T-Mobile G1 and immediately realized that we could no longer have root access. Fear not, chavonbravo, an astute member of the XDA-developers forum got their hands on the RC29 firmware and uploaded it for all to use.

Taking a look at the directions, it doesn’t look especially tough to flash back. If you want to gain root access again, check out the step-by-step instructions from the XDA after the break!

Turn Your Regular T-Mobile G1 Into a Developer’s Edition

We already told you guys about the Developer’s Edition of the T-Mobile G1, but what if you already have a T-Mobile G1 but want the Developer’s benefits? Well, first off, you have to thank the hackers. Apparently, the bootloader for the Developer G1 has been extracted and is now available to anyone who’s daring enough to use it. Basically, get root access and apply the bootloader. If you do mess up any steps though, beware, your phone may be bricked.

The benefits of running a Developer’s Edition G1? Well, you can potentially mod it like crazy!

Google, Welcome to Jailbreaking - Android Style

Welcome to the Jailbroken Club, Google. As surely as there are hackers, so is there jailbreaking of popular and up-and-coming OS’s. Even though the Android OS is an open system, Google isn’t crazy about users having access to the goodies behind the scenes of the Android OS as evidenced by their statement responding to the jailbreaking issue:

We’ve been notified of this issue (Jailbreaking of Android) and have developed a fix. We’re currently working with our partners to push the fix out and updating the open source code base to reflect these changes.

Google’s fix (patch) should be available in the next firmware update, RC30. Like I said, welcome to jailbreaking, Google. Be prepared for the endless cycle of patch - jailbreak - patch - jailbreak, ad infinitum. Even though the Android OS is open, there seems to be benefits for the programming diehards to jailbreak.

How To Update to RC30 But Still Have Root Access (Jailbreak)

We at Android Central have a feeling that the battle between Google and G1 Jailbreakers will continue for the foreseeable future. After reporting that the RC30 update kills root access to your G1 which effectively limits jailbreaking, the fine folks from XDA developers found a fix. If you have yet to update your T-Mobile G1 to the RC30 update and want to remain jailbroken, well they’ve found a way to have your cake and eat it too. Updated already? Sorry, you’ll have to wait for the next round. Check out the complicated details after the break.

How To Load Debian Onto Your T-Mobile G1

Whoa. Though Google and T-mobile squashed root access with the RC30 update it didn’t stop people from having fun with it in the few days the G1 was jailbroken. Case in point: Jay Freeman loaded Debian onto the G1. For those who don’t know, Debian Linux is another OS that adheres to openness.

What’s even better than simply loading Debian onto the G1 is that he managed to get Android and Debian to work together. So you can have Android for your phone purposes and Debian for everything else. A great compromise no? To be sure, the process isn’t for the faint of heart so be wary of jumping into this very, very cool hack.

We at Android Central will choose to sit and admire from afar. Don’t say we didn’t warn ya!

T-Mobile G1, Android Jailbroken !

Boy do these Android Users move fast. We have news that the T-Mobile G1 has been jailbroken. Meaning full system access and read and write capabilities have been obtained. We have yet to try the method but its supposed to be quite easy.

Here are the basic steps (via modmygphone):

  1. Turn on WiFi in the G1 (Settings > Wireless Controls > Wi-Fi). Make sure you’re connected to a network.
  2. Start up PTerminal (search in the Market) and you’ll get a prompt once its launched.
  3. Enter cd system and hit Enter.
  4. Enter cd bin and hit Enter.
  5. Enter telnetd and hit Enter. You’ve now started telnet on your G1.
  6. Enter netstat and hit Enter. You’ll now see your G1’s IP address. You can also find this in the Settings > Wireless Controls > Wi-Fi > and click on your network you’re connected to. It will show you your IP.
  7. Start up Terminal on your OS X machine, or bring up a command prompt on your Windows box. Type telnet[your.ip.address.we.just.found] and hit Enter/Return. So, if your IP was 192.168.1.101, you’d type telnet 192.168.1.101 and hit Enter/Return.
  8. You are logged in as root now. To remount the system file as read write, type mount -oremount,rw/dev/block/mtdblock3/system from the Terminal/Command Prompt and hit Enter/Return.
This method will obviously be for those eager to explore the inner workings of your G1. But if you still want to jailbreak but aren’t so confident in your hackerish talents, the G1 jailbreakers are expecting more major breakthroughs on the jailbreaking front. Check this space for updates!

T-Mobile G1 Works With No Activation

We already showed you guys how to unlock the T-Mobile G1. Now we’re catching word that it’s possible to use the G1 with no activation with no hackery or tomfoolery necessary. Simply, when you get the G1, insert an already activated T-Mobile SIM card (preferably from a very nice friend), go through the sign in process, and switch on Wi-Fi. According to the enterprising user who did this, you can do everything the G1 can do except phone-related tasks.

Be wary, we’re not actually endorsing this option until we actually try it because we’ve already run into an issue with the T-Mobile G1 not working without a data plan. Let us know in the comments if you were able to rig this setup and have a halfway functional T-Mobile G1 with no activation!
